   About Geoinformatics

Imagine world without a map, and then people across countries would have been living in their own worlds completely isolated. Creating maps has the history of thousands of years. The formal map making came to existence in 200 AD, where map making became a science. As we came into 20th century with the invention of computers, the definition of map has changed and has become a digital map with attributed information attached alongwith.

There are many types of maps, few to name are, navigational maps, Topo maps, Planimetric maps, soil maps, seismic maps, mining maps, land use and land cover maps etc.

Map making has limitless applications associated. Every infrastructure development needs some or other form of map that includes, roads, railway, power generation & transmission, oil and gas, telecommunication, mining, river and canals development, urban planning & development, Forest, watershed resources management, defence etc.

Basic source of creating an accurate map is aerial and satellite photography. This has given a new dimension to map as one can overlay map on the image to provide better understanding and visualization.

With the invention of Geographical Positioning System (GPS), map making has become more accurate and precise. GPS was a Military gadget, but due to the usefulness, now has gained popularity amongst common man.

Photogrammetric mapping has major role to play in geospatial industry. This 3D map-making technology has been great tool for all Infrastructure design and development as it generates output faster with better reliability and enhanced quality.

Geoinformatics is a science which develops and uses information science infrastructure to address the problems of geography, geosciences and related branches of engineering. Geoinformatics combines geospatial analysis and modeling, development of geospatial databases, information systems design, human-computer interaction and both wired and wireless networking technologies.

Geoinformatics technologies include geographic information systems, spatial decision support systems, global positioning systems (GPS), and remote sensing. Geoinformatics uses geocomputation for analyzing geoinformatics.

Urban and rural planning, environmental and biodiversity management are increasingly becoming reliant on Spatial Information Systems together with the use of air- and space-borne data acquisition systems. Large amounts of data are being collected which needs to be analysed. The derived results from such analyses need to be disseminated in user friendly formats that are regularly updated. The Internet has become the de facto instrument for disseminating information to broader audiences. With technological advances comes the need for training in the use and development of such systems.

Geospatial industry is growing and the requirement of adequate skilled manpower is bound to grow in manifolds. With SIG’s vision to fulfill these demands, our various courses provide opening to the successful geospatial career.
